Nagato:
Pain was once a young Rain orphan named Nagato. During his youth in the war torn Rain Country, he met fellow orphans Konan and Yahiko. Nagato was a quiet child who admired Yahiko's desire to improve their living conditions and bring some justice to the world. The trio met the Sannin following the war with the Rain Village. Jiraiya took a liking to the children and stayed behind to look after them. Jiraiya was surprised to learn that the emotional and quiet Nagato was a wielder of the Rinnegan, the venerated Doujutsu once possessed by Rikudou Sennin, the man regarded as the original modern shinobi. Nagato and Yahiko were accosted by a vagrant Rock Ninja, and Yahiko moved to defend them. He was defeated and Nagato went into a berserk rage, quickly killing the ninja. Nagato was shocked when he finally regained control and Jiraiya promised to train the orphans so they could defend themselves.
Nagato had trouble dealing with the way he reacted to the Rock ninja and Jiraiya explained that he shouldn't feel ashamed, as he was defending his friend. And that knowing what it feels like to be hurt is the reason why humans are kind to others. Nagato wondered how he could become like that and Jiraiya explained it just came with age. Nagato then promised to keep his friends safe, no matter what pain he had to experience. Three years passed and the trio were soon skilled enough to defeat one of Jiraiya's Kage Bunshin. Jiraiya explained that his time with them had ended and that hard times would still be ahead for them. But by working together they could change things, as they had finally grown up. Over the following years the trio entered many battles and rumors emerged that they may have died. Nagato continued to develop his skills and his Doujutsu and took on the name of "Pain".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pain:
As Pain, Nagato began to gather other disenfranchised Rain shinobi and start a civil war with Hidden Rain. This apparently was a plan in line with Yahiko's expressed goals. Though Rain was led by legendary ninja Sanshouuo no Hanzou, Pain managed to kill Hanzou. He did not stop with merely Hanzou though, for he killed Hanzou's family, friends and associates; essentially taking down Hidden Rain all by himself. And though Pain had followers, they never saw Pain personally. His abilities, appearance and heartless nature thus fueled rumors about his identity. This also caused his followers to revere him as a god. In this position he operated out of the tallest tower in the Rain Country industrial city. It was in this tower he also maintained a secret room which hid his greatest secret.
Some years before Pain became part of the Akatsuki organization. Konan joined as well, and was one of the few living persons aware of Pain's past. Over the years she had seen him fight many battles and believed that he had never once lost in battle. She and his followers were also aware of his ability to control the rain around them. This he apparently did on schedule, so when rain fell on other days, his followers knew something was on his mind. Pain could also use this water to detect the chakra of opponents and feel their presence.
As leader of Akatsuki, Pain was adamant that the group could fulfill their desires if they possessed the bijuu. He used many skills to help further the goals of the group. One jutsu was a Shouten technique, which allowed the group members to take over the sacrificed body of another in exchange for some measure of their chakra. He also was responsible for summoning the huge King of Hell statue which held the bijuu withdrawn from Jinchuuriki.
Pain told the group their ultimate goal was to control the world, which could be accomplished through three steps: Step One is for the group to attain money. Step Two is to create the first mercenary group. Shinobi villages make money for their country, and for the money to be steady it requires war. Because there have not been any large scale wars in awhile, the ninja villages were being reduced in size. The Five Great Shinobi Villages could handle the downtrend, but the smaller villages could not. Akatsuki would form their own fighting force with no country allegiance. This force could undercut all the other villages and fight their battles for cheap. Then using the bijuu they could create new wars and gain a monopoly over the whole market. In the end they would control all the wars and be powerful enough to even collapse the shinobi villages of the large countries, forcing them to rely on Akatsuki as well. With all that in hand, the group can achieve Step Three, to control the world.
This stated goal may actually be a smokescreen, however, as Pain was seen reporting to new Akatsuki recruit Tobi in secret. Tobi directed Pain to capture Naruto personally in his role as leader, which apparently drew out an emotional response from Pain in the form of rain. It was then revealed that Tobi was in fact the long thought dead Uchiha Madara, a legendary shinobi like Rikudou Sennin. While Pain was making preparations to capture Naruto, he was alerted to the arrival of his former sensei Jiraiya in Hidden Rain. Pain went into his secret hideout, which housed the bodies of five other cloaked figures. As one Pain moved to rest, another rose from his slumber. This hidden ability of Rinnegan to share multiple bodies with one consciousness would prove decisive in his upcoming battle. Leaving behind the body he used in the series up to this point, Pain selected a body skilled in summoning.
As he appeared before Jiraiya, his former teacher learned that the young boy he once knew as Nagato was now the completely different looking ninja before him. Pain explained how the past mattered little, but that Yahiko was now dead and that the pain of all the people who died there helped him grow as a person. It was this very pain that allowed him to grown from a mere person into a god. And as a god, he would put an end to wars through the creation of the ultimate Kinjutsu. A jutsu fueled by the power of the Bijuu, one strong enough to wipe one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries off the map. This jutsu would be offered to anyone, and through mutually assured destruction and the pain that follows such slaughter, mankind would be afraid to cause war again in the future and peace could finally be achieved.
The battle continued and what followed was a barrage of summoned animal attacks, with Jiraiya summoning a toad to help him battle the various beasts Pain called to his aid. Pain eventually summoned a giant chameleon which he used to blend into the surroundings and disappear. Jiraiya responded by calling upon two elder Toad Sennin to assist. It was then revealed that Pain could possibly be the "destined" child, a student of Jiraiya's prophesized to bring peace or ultimate destruction to the world. The Sennin managed to take out the Chameleon and force Pain to show himself once again.
Standing before the Sennin, Pain moved to summon yet again. This time two other Rinnegan users were called to his side. For the first time another deadly power of the Rinnegan was revealed, Pain's ability to operate multiple bodies at once and share the sensory information between them. These two new bodies each had their own specialties and skills. The battle began and one of the Pains moved to use Taijutsu against Jiraiya; which he countered with a kick to the face, blinding the attacker. Another body used an absorption technique to dissipate any incoming chakra or elemental attack. Seeing his foe have the upper hand, Jiraiya fled to nearby pipes.
Pain gave chase but fell into a well placed Genjutsu trap by Jiraiya and the toads. Unable to use his Rinnegan to counter, Jiraiya captured the three men and immobilized them. Jiraiya offered that he was sad Nagato had led his life astray. He then finished them off by impaling them into the ground. While thinking over his victory Jiraiya was suddenly blasted away through the nearby city. Three more Rinnegan users had arrived, one of which removed the impaling swords from his fallen comrades. This individual apparently revived the slain bodies and soon six Rinnegan users stood before the severely injured Jiraiya. Among the group was Pain's initial body, which Jiraiya quickly recognized was an adult Yahiko. Jiraiya tried to grasp why the man Nagato claimed was dead was among the group before him. Pain acknowledged Yahiko's death, but said the man before him was Pain, they all were. Together they were Pain Rikudou, and as such, were a god.
The six men forced Jiraiya to retreat into the stomach of a summoned toad. The summoning Pain managed to infiltrate the barrier and stab Jiraiya with his chakra disruption spear. The maneuver cost him his life and Jiraiya finally noticed that the Pain before him was a man he had fought years before. Unable to figure out what that meant, Jiraiya risked his life to leave the barrier and confront Pain once again. He quickly saw that all the Pains before him were ninja he had met in the past from all over the world. In that instant he realized Pain's true identity. Pain quickly moved to silence Jiraiya and the men all stabbed their former teacher, killing him. As they moved to leave they watched in surprise as Jiraiya willed himself back to life, to leave one final message with the remaining Toad Sennin, that of Pain's true identity. One Pain fired off his arm to stop the message but the toad escaped in time. Jiraiya himself succeeded in his mission and disappeared into the nearby depths of murky water. The Yahiko Pain then used his Suiton abilities to sense the dying Jiraiya's escape. Zetsu then arrived and offered his thoughts on the battle. The previously unbeaten Pain then offered that it was only by keeping his secret that he was allowed victory that day. With the knowledge of his true nature escaping with one of the Toad Sennin, Pain's days may be numbered.
Sometime later Konoha received Jiraiya's coded message along with the frog containing his Fuuma Clan body. This body was taken for autopsy by Shizune to help learn its secrets. Jiraiya's code was given to the Konoha Code Breakers and Shikamaru. The group went to Naruto for help. He pointed out how the initial character was probably a "ta" rather than a number 9. This lead to the group pulling the first words on certain pages in Icha Icha Tactics that corresponded to the numbers in Jiraiya's code. When brought together the code stated that "the real one isn't with them". Possibly hinting that the real Pain does not travel with the Rikudou bodies. Since he lost the use of the Fuuma body, Pain revealed a new member to his group, a pierced kunoichi. With his Rikudou army now six strong, Pain and Konan finally set out to hunt for the Kyuubi in Konoha.
Upon reaching the outer wall of Konoha, Pain Rikudou and Konan took on their assignments. The Asura, Animal and Hungry Ghost Realm bodies would act as diversions, while Konan and the Deva, Human and Hell realms acted as reconnaissance to hunt for Naruto. Seeking to hide their numbers, Asura hurled Animal through the barrier protecting the village. Once inside, she summoned the rest of the group. The group then split to begin their attack. Asura removed his forearm to launch missile attacks and Animal summoned a giant centipede. Human found a Leaf ninja and interrogated him as to the Kyuubi's whereabouts. The man did not know Naruto's location so Human removed the man's soul and continued on.

Pain's Bodies:
Tendou [Deva Realm](天道, Tendō), Pain's first observed body, is the body of Yahiko, and possesses medium length spiky hair, seven piercings and a metal bar through each ear, three studs through the side of his upper nose and one spike stud on each end of his bottom lip. He also wears a beaded necklace.
Unlike the other bodies, this body seems to have access to multiple forms of ninjutsu, demonstrated from all the defenses put up to stop intruders from interfering with the sealing of a demon. It also seems to have retained Yahiko's affinity for water-chakra, shown from its ability to summon and control rain, and can conjure and stop it at will, even maintain it for long periods of time. This is apparently tied into his mood. In addition he can detect the movements and chakra levels of people traveling within the rain, making it difficult to infiltrate Amegakure by stealth. It is later revealed that he has the ability "Force Manipulation" that allows him to control attractive and repulsive forces on objects through space in relation to himself. This ability lets him deflect any attacking object around him or pull it in for counterattacks. However he cannot perform it in rapid succession leaving him vulnerable for a short period of time after its use. This body also seems to be more important than Pain's other bodies, as seen when Pain would readily sacrifice his Asura Path to protect this body. This may or may not be a consequence of Nagato and Yahiko's former friendship and emotional attachment to this body, which is a possibility, since Pain is capable of recreating Paths with spare corpses (as seen in case of the Animal Path). It also may simply be because this body is more powerful then the others and thus is more important in a battle.
This body is apparently his preferred form for interacting with others since he has participated in all sealing rituals and has been seen in several flashbacks by Amegakure members. It later leads the assault on Konoha to locate Naruto, and during reconnaissance, ends up clashing with Kakashi Hatake, Choza and Choji Akamichi, and other Konoha shinobi. Despite severe injuries of the Asura Path, the Deva Path almost effortlessly defeats them all, leaving Choza Akamichi seemingly dead and Kakashi injured and unconscious. He then turns his attention to Tsunade. After growing impatient with Tsunade's lack of understanding true pain, the Deva Path proceeds to use Shinra Tensei to destroy most of the Village. He is currently about to engage Naruto in battle along with the other Paths of Pain.

Gakidou [Hungry Ghost Realm](餓鬼道, Gakidō) is the body of a fat, bulky man with six spike stud piercings covering his entire bottom lip, two studs vertical on the front of his nose, two spike studs one on each cheek, a metal bar going through each ear, and a stud on his shoulder one on each side close to his neck. Originally this body was from Kusagakure.
This body's ability "Energy Absorption" is primarily defensive, since he is capable of absorbing any Ninjutsu related technique, such as Jiraiya's Super Great Ball Rasengan and Hermit's Art: Goemon, nullifying them and sucking them into his torso. This technique can also take the form of a large bubble around his body, allowing to absorb attacks from any direction.
This body has participated in the battle with Jiraiya and later acted as a distraction during Pains invasion of Konoha, holding off a number of Leaf ninja by absorbing all their attacks forcing them to rely on Taijutsu to battle him. He is later seen removing the piercings from the autopsy room containing the former Animal Path. At the same time Kiba and his mother enter and attack him; however, he used the deceased Animal Path's body to shield himself. When he engages with Naruto Uzumaki in Sage Mode, he is quickly defeated with just a punch because of the natural energy gathering within sage mode.

Chikushoudou [Animal Realm](畜生道, Chikushōdō), Pain's newest body is the replacement of the body lost in the fight against Jiraiya. This body has a very young appearance and, unlike all the other bodies, was originally female, with its hair tied together in a sort of onion like bun at the top of the head and spikes of hair protruding out of it. It has one stud above the nose, studs on either side of the neck, a row of studs vertically down each cheek, a stud below each stud on the neck and two studs on each forearm. When Inoichi is searching through the mind of a man from Amegakure he saw that a man and a friend bring this body, dead and without its piercings, to the tower where Pain resides.
This body can be seen as a reincarnation of (or replacement for) Pain's second body, as both bodies were used primarily for "Multiple Summonings". It is seen calling forth a giant centipede, the multi headed splitting abilitied giant dog, a rhino and the other Pain's.
This body was first seen when Pain began his approach to Konoha. After being launched through the villages barrier techniques it summoned the other bodies of Pain and proceeded to cause chaos with its summoned creatures. It latter was seen approaching Konoha's interrogation ward with the Human Path and has begun battle with Ibiki, two ANBU, Shizune, Inoichi and Ino though the latter three have fallen back to discover more about the secret of Pain.
After seeing Animal Path demonstrate her summoning prowess, Shizune and the rest of the ANBU interrogators are startled by this as the corpse they received from Jiraiya was said to be the summoner of Pain's bodies and the new knowledge that the current Animal Path was originally dead.
After Pain uses Shinra Tensei, she is launched into the village again and summons the rest of Pain's bodies.

Chikushoudou [Animal Realm](Former)
Pain's second body, distinguished by a long ponytail and a large bridge piercing through his upper nose and attaching on each cheek, one on his upper nose, and six rimming around the bottom of his face. After being killed and examined, this body was shown to have multiple piercings on his chest as well. The appearance of this body, when first seen, was compared to that of fellow Akatsuki member Deidara. Prior to Jiraiya's encounter with Pain, one of his subordinates noted that some believe Pain to have been from the Fūma clan. This is because this body was originally a man from the Fūma clan, recognized by Jiraiya as a man who had ambushed him, ending up scarred across the forehead in the process.
This body is a powerful summoner, capable of conjuring a massive variety of different animal summons for various different purposes, and most significantly the other bodies of Pain. Each animal summon also shares his Rinnegan eyes and various piercings suggesting that they too are under his control.
This body was the first one encountered by Jiraiya, and was eventually killed and sent to Konoha for study. It is later seen once more when the Preta Path comes to the body and begins to remove the black piercings from its corpse. (The piercings were removed by konoha ninjas formerly, so he wanted something else)

Jigokudou [Hell Realm](地獄道, Jigokudō) is the body of a very tall stocky muscular man with a spiky mop of hair (similar in style to Kisame Hoshigaki), with triple bar ear piercings, a stud on his upper nose, a stud on his shoulders near his neck, and a row of studs diagonally down each cheek.
This body's ability King of Hell seem to be an entity similar to the Death God, although he is physically strong enough to hold a fully grown men in each hand off the ground with no apparent effort. His "Hell Avatar" ability takes the form of a giant demonic head, which protrudes from the ground behind him and is shrouded in black flames. He asks a question, and after an answer is given, the giant's mouth opens, releasing tendril like arms that force a stream of energy (possibly the person's life energy or soul) from the victim. If the person was telling a lie, their life force is completely removed and eaten, and they are seemingly killed. If they were telling the truth, they remain alive, though left extremely exhausted. Outsiders are unable to see the demon.
This body appeared in the later half of Pain's battle with Jiraiya and freed the bodies Jiraya had apparently killed and impaled on large swords. He later acts an interrogator during Pain's invasion of Konoha along with the Deva and Human Paths. After torturing and most likely killing several Konoha ninjas without success he is confronted by and captures Ebisu, but is distracted and challenged by Konohamaru. He is seemingly incapacitated by the Rasengan Konohamaru used. He is seen again in chapter 429 page 10, meaning he is still alive.
Another of this body's powers, most likely its main purpose, is to resurrect or "heal" other Paths. By summoning the King of Hell, Pain engulfs the body he wants to heal in it and the body comes out completely repaired. This is possibly done by "transferring" the life energy that he's collected from victims into his deceased bodies, allowing them to become functional again (similar to the technique Chiyo used on Gaara). Once he uses this technique he needs time to recharge power which possibly means that he can't use King Of Hell at all since Deva Path Pain was protecting him in the most recent chapter.

Shuradou [Asura Realm](修羅道, Shuradō): is the body of a tall bald man with a very unusual body shape, possessing a very thick neck, a big square shaped jaw, with a large ring piercing vertically on his nose, six spike studs all around his head, three studs on the top and bottom of each of his arms, an enormous spike stud on his chin and two vertical spikes on each upper cheek. This body's face is strangely set in a permanent smile.
His ability is based on "Body Alterations", allowing him to modify himself with artificial mechanical body parts. Under his cloak the body is revealed to have completely robotic inner workings and a completely inhuman appearance, possessing six arms, three faces each with a different emotion: happy, neutral, and angry (thus resembling the mythical Asura from Buddhist mythology) and a folded serrated blade-like tail. He can fire one of his left forearms off as a long range projectile, pull out one of his right arms to reveal a cluster of segmented cluster missiles, open up the crown of his head to release a titanic shockwave, and protruding from his back is a long and flexible saw-like blade that can be whipped at a target. All of these abilities befit the "warring demon" name that the Asura path holds, while giving it a considerably higher degree of versatility than the other Paths have.
During the invasion of Konoha this body caused devastation throughout the village until joining Deva Pain's battle against Kakashi only to be crushed by Choza Akimichi and Choji Akimichi after Kakashi's Lightning Clone Technique rendered him unable to move. Even sustaining so much damage he was still able to move to defend Deva from Kakashi's Lightning Blade, only to be completely cut open. However when Choji later tries to escape, with the knowledge of the Deva Path Pain's abilities, the body reveals that it is still alive, although incapacitated, and fires one of its missiles at Choji. This missile is however stopped by Kakashi's Kamui technique.
This body was later healed by Naraka path, by summoning the King of Hell and engulfing Asura in its mouth, he emerged completely restored. He then proceeded to attack Tsunade but was stopped and then quickly destroyed by Naruto's Rasengan in Sage Mode.
- Jutsu
Ningendou [Human Realm](人間道, Ningendō) is the body of a tall slender man with very long loose hair, a diagonal bar though his nose, two studs vertically on each cheek, two studs horizontal from each other on his upper chin, and a stud on his shoulders near his neck. This body was originally from Takigakure.
This body's abilities are largely obscure since Jiraiya damaged this Path's eyes early on in his battle but it showed immense physical prowess, being able to block Hermit Mode Jiraiya's punch and not even flinch (at all circumstances, an impressive feat). More recently however he has shown the ability "Mind Tampering", allowing him to affect minds similar to the Yamanaka clan by touching another being's head in order to extract information. He's capable of reading the person's mind in seconds and without need of additional equipment. The Human Path then proceeded to rip out the ninja's consciousness, most likely killing the victim.
This body has participated in Pain's battle with Jiraiya and later as a reconnaissance force during the invasion of Konoha. He was seen approaching the village's interrogation center accompanied by the new Animal Path. Recently it is shown to be watching the battle between the Animal Path and Konoha's interrogation team consisting of Ibiki, two ANBU, Shizune, Inoichi and Ino. When the latter three retreat he follows them to the interrogation center. He ambushes the group and holds Shizune hostage. Reading her mind in the process, the Human Path pinpoints Naruto Uzumaki's current location as Myobokuzan. He later unhesitatingly disposes of Shizune by ripping her soul out of her body.
